short soapbox moment

I haven't always been weird about food. I have many a memory happily eating spam and velveeta. I really used to love canned corned beef hash. And Sunday night dinner (the fend for yourself if you want anything other than a huge bowl of popcorn night) wasn't complete without a bacon and mayo sammidge on gushy white bread.

I spent my lunch hour reading about the impending Farm Bill. What a mess. Here's the USDA Farm Bill site and here's a decent action guide though we're already fast approaching the debating stage. Please please please start thinking about where your food comes from. It is less destructive to the environment to buy local. It's helpful economically for your community to buy directly from the grower if at all possible. It is healthier for you to eat what's in season. I ain't claiming to be no saint. I rely on big bad farms from California during the winter (though someday I'm going to get me a huge freezer and just spend the summer putting up produce) and I like to indulge my love of junk food like everyone else. But consider trying to spend the majority of your grocery bill locally. It's not more expensive, it's just more time. In fact, my weekly grocery bill has dropped 30% since I started shopping at the farmer's market.

Climbing down off my soapbox...

So, it's Friday. It's been a rough couple of nights of sleeping so I'm not sure what's going to be happening this weekend. Tomorrow morning I'm farmer's marketing and it's a big one as I'm almost out of produce. Tonight's supper will consist of some lettuce, some beets, some feta and whatever else I can scrounge about. Plus, once again, I'm completely out of fruit. And everyone knows how much I hate to be completely out of fruit. I have some writing and reading I'd like to get done. I'll have no choice but to flee to a movie theater at some point as temperatures are supposed to hit 90 degrees Sunday and Transformers and Ratatouille are both out. I might get to see Raleigh. Or I might not.

That's it. That's my plan.
