i think i feel confident enough to say i liked it

Saw the movie "Once" last night. I was kind of distracted at the beginning as I was taking down my Christmas tree (which is way less fun than putting up a Christmas tree, I might add) so my initial reaction was pretty negative. The lyrics were so heartfelt. The people were so perfectly European in their hipness. The story was so done. And then I got hooked. And then I got REALLY hooked. And then I got fooled. It was the getting fooled part that probably won me over as I was so convinced I knew how that movie was going to end and then it came and the ending was so much more perfect than I ever thought possible. I remained a little more cynical than Peter though his ringing endorsement of "If you could go out on a date and see that movie you'd totally get some play" is dead on. So single men of the world invite the object of your affection over to check this out on DVD. Report back.

I'm off tomorrow as I'm on Saturday.

Meh.

After an entire summer of local movie critics begging me to see this movie, and after seeing Glen Hansard at the Hideout block party, I finally got the movie on netflix about two weeks ago. I can't understand the big deal. It's not that it's low budget, which is fine. It's that it sucks. Paltry, predictable performances stagger together a less-than-memorable script. My favorite part are the musical numbers that are seemingly played perfect on the first try, every try. This film has caused me to lose faith NY Times' film critic A.O. Scott.

There was a script?!

No but seriously, Kevin, it's a ROMANCE. And a MUSICAL. They were supposed to play perfectly the first time every time because that's what happens in musicals.

Overrated? Definitely. I actually had a harder time with the syrupy sweet lyrics more than lackluster performances given the two of them are songwriters not actors. But for those looking for a bittersweet love story, I think it really works.

Plus, you know, the whole dudes could totally get laid thing if they were on a date is dead on.
